The only known function of iodine in the body is as an essential component of the thyroid hormones.2,4 The thyroid gland removes iodine from the blood and attaches it to tyrosine-containing proteins to form the thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid hormones are then secreted into the bloodstream and are important regulators of cell activity and growth, both in utero and throughout life. Although they affect all tissues, they are particularly important in the development of the nervous and skeletal systems.

Hormonal Influences

The thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triidothyronine (T3) regulate temperature and metabolism. In rats given intraperitoneal injections of bilberry antho-cyanins (200 mg kg day) for 5 days, significantly more T3 was found in their brains than rats given only the solvent (26 alcohol) (Saija et al., 1990). T3 enters the brain via specific transport in the capillaries, therefore anthocyanins may mediate T3 transport at the capillary level. The specific portions of the brain that contained more T3 in the bilberry-treated animals were those responsible for memory, vision, and control of sensory input the frontal, temporoparietal and occipital cortexes, and the components of the limbic system (hippocampus, thalamus, and hypothalamus).


Iodine needs increase during pregnancy for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Maternal iodine deficiency during pregnancy can result in the enlargement of a woman's thyroid gland, development of goiter, and hypothyroidism. Maternal hypothyroidism increases the risk of a variety of poor fetal outcomes including stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, congenital anomalies, mental retardation, deafness, spastic dysplegia, and cretinism 3 . To avoid risk of harm to the fetus, maternal iodine deficiency should be corrected prior to conception. During gestation, fetal iodine deposition is approximately 75 mcg day. Results from iodine balance studies as well as iodine supplementation trials to prevent thyroid enlargement and goiter during pregnancy corroborate that an additional 70 mcg day is required to cover the pregnancy needs of 97-98 of the population during pregnancy 20 .

Basal metabolic rate is controlled to a considerable extent by the thyroid hormone tri-iodothyronine, and iodine deficiency (section results in impaired synthesis of thyroid hormone, a low metabolic rate and hence ready weight gain. Pathological overactivity of the thyroid gland results in increased synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormone, and an increased basal metabolic rate, with weight loss. The synthesis of thyroid hormone is regulated, and in the absence of thyroid disease provision of additional iodine does not increase hormone secretion except in people who were iodine deficient. Foremost among these are the so-called slimming patches, which contain seaweed extract as a source of iodine which is supposed to be absorbed from a small patch applied to the skin. Iodide is a key component of thyroid hormone, which is made in the thyroid gland located in the neck. Thyroid hormone is constructed from iodide and the amino acid tyrosine and has two forms thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) based on the number of iodide atoms (3 or 4). Thyroid hormone affects most cells in the body, perhaps with the exception of the adult brain, testes, spleen, uterus, and the thyroid gland itself. A goiter is a noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid gland in the front of the neck. Many conditions can cause goiter, but the most common is a lack of sufficient iodine in the diet, which is usually a result of the soil in which food is grown being iodine-poor a condition that occurs in many mountainous regions away from the sea. Iodine is required for the production of thyroid hormones, which regulate the body's metabolism.

However, it can also increase blood pressure, respiration rate, heart rate, anxiety, migraines, and irregular heartbeat, and it can cause insomnia, psychosis, and nervousness. Ephedra and caffeine are often present in the same product, which can be detrimental to the heart. The maximum safe level of ephedra is 24 mg per day, but many products contain over 300 mg per dose. This supplement is contraindicated in those with a history of heart disease or hypertension, kidney or thyroid disease, seizure disorder, or diabetes.

While hemochromatosis is a genetically inherited disorder, not everyone with the gene has the full-blown clinical expression of the disease. About 18-20 percent escape the disease. Vitamin D works together with PTH on the bone and kidney and is necessary for intestinal absorption of calcium. Vitamin D can either be obtained from the diet or produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Insufficient vitamin D from these sources can result in rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, conditions that result in bone deformities. Cow's milk should never be given to a newborn or young child since it has a much higher level of glutamate than human milk and also is strongly associated with juvenile diabetes. Do not feed your baby soy milk. Soy milk is high in glutamate and contains estrogenic plant compounds.
