Vitamin A is one of nature's primary anticancer substances, particularly in the skin and mucous membranes. Ample intakes of vitamin A have been shown to protect against cancers of the lung, bladder, prostate, larynx, esophagus, stomach, and colon. Vitamin A can prevent precancerous lesions, such as oral leukoplakia (white patches on the lips and mouth often found in smokers) and cervical dysplasia, from developing and may produce regression and disappearance of these disorders.15 As a cancer treatment, large doses of retinoic acid may reduce growth and recurrence of certain forms of skin cancer.16 As an antioxidant, beta-carotene helps provide protection against damage from many xenobiotics (such as polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs ). It may also reduce the risk of skin cancer associated with exposure to sunlight6 and radiation.2

Animal Studies

The direct influence of P-cryptoxanthin intake on the development of colon tumors has been studied in F344 rats (Narisawa et al., 1999 ). N-methyl-nitrosourea-induced colon cancer in rats is significantly reduced for those given high doses of P-cryptoxanthin (25 ppm dietary level). Twenty-four (96 ) of 25 control rats compared to only 17 (68 ) of 25 P-cryptoxanthin-supplemented rats developed tumors during the 30-week study (p < 0.02). Lower doses of 1 or 5 ppm did not produce a statistically significant reduction in the number of tumors observed in similar study groups. Tissue levels were significantly elevated for the high-dose animals but not for those given the lower doses. Another rodent study (Nishino et al., 1999) investigated the effect of P-cryptoxanthin against tumorigenesis in mouse skin. There is a marked variation among countries in incidence of different cancers. In fact, India has the world's highest incidence of oral cancer, with 75,000 to 80,000 new cases a year. The population of Japan has the highest rates of stomach cancer in the world due to the high consumption of raw fish by the Japanese.

Causes of Cancer

Overweight and obesity are associated with increased risk of cancers of the breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, and gallbladder. Radiation from a variety of sources, including the ultraviolet light from the sun, is known to lead to skin cancer. Two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, have been found to cause some breast cancers. Other genes have been discovered that are associated with some cancers that run in families, such as cancers of the colon, rectum, kidney, ovary, esophagus, lymph nodes, skin melanoma, and pancreas.
