Other Transporters

The major glucose transporters in cells have been the identified and cloned GLUTs 1-5. There are reports, however, of a possible GLUT 6 and GLUT 7. GLUT 6 (Pseudogene-like Sequence)

A cDNA clone isolated from a human jejunum cDNA library hybridized to an approximately 11-kb transcript expressed at variable levels in all normal and tumor cells examined (22). The sequence of a partial-length GLUT 6 cDNA revealed approximately 80% identity with the human brain GLUT 3 transporter. However, because of multiple stop codons and frame shifts, the sequence could not encode a functional glucose transporter protein. The GLUT 6 gene was located on the long arm of human chromosome 5.
