Modification Of Essential Nutrient Needs

Needs for essential nutrients may be influenced by (a) the presence in the diet of substances for which the nutrient is a precursor, that are precursors of the nutrient, or that interfere with the absorption or utilization of the nutrient; (b) imbalances and disproportions of other related nutrients; (c) some genetic defects; and (d) use of drugs that impair utilization of nutrients. These conditions do not alter basic requirements; they just increase or decrease the amounts that must be consumed to meet requirements. A few examples below illustrate the general characteristics of such effects.
