A large number of patients suffer from very mild to very severe depression. I had one patient who recently suffered from a bipolar disorder--in which one has manic episodes as well as depressions and the depression was totally resistant to all of the antidepressant drugs that another psychiatrist had tried on her. I began working with her, using some nutrients and giving her some vitamin C drips. It turned out that she had probably had the bipolar disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome on top of that. And the two conditions together resulted in her not being able to get out of the depression at all, because of the severe, overwhelming chronic fatigue. When we dealt with the chronic-fatigue aspect of it, by giving her some vitamin C drips and some nutrients, including a hormone called DHEA that was low in her system, she improved.
My daughter has been helped in a dramatic way by alternative medical approaches. A couple of months ago, my daughter, Maria, became wildly out of control. She's only nine years old, but she was going out at five and six o'clock in the morning to shop with homeless people. She would go into violent rages and would sleep only about four or five hours a night. Finally, I couldn't keep her home any more and so I put her into a psychiatric hospital where they determined that she was suffering from manic depression. They started her on lithium but she wasn't herself she wasn't conversational the way she usually is, and she was still depressed. She had elevated liver and enzymes which, at the hospital, they failed to follow up on. She also had elevated levels of thyroid hormone, which they also failed to follow up on. After three weeks in the hospital, she had calmed down somewhat, and I was able to take her home. She still wasn't well.
Evidence from preclinical and clinical data suggests that GABA plays a role both in the pathophysiology of depression and bipolar disorder and in the mechanisms of action of antidepressant agents 30,31 Low GABA concentrations and receptor activity in the brain cause depression, palpitation, insomnia, learning disorders, and memory failure .29,32-34 GABA concentration in the CSF is inversely correlated with the severity of depression 35
Most experts in orthomolecular psychiatry focus on major psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, or the mood disorders like manic depression, or psychotic depression and disorders. While these disorders, along with panic attacks or severe anxiety problems, can have a major impact on one's life, I want to focus on the vast majority of people whose complaints are less dramatic. They are the ones who just don't feel well, who don't enjoy life fully, because they haven't learned how to live with themselves or reached orthomolecular balance.
In addition, some of these peptides have been found to be identical to certain brain hormones (endorphins) that are associated with panic attacks, depression, manic depression, schizophrenia, and other conditions. In these cases (with more certainly to be discovered) there is no need for
We know about genetic factors through the action of certain drugs. We see what chemical changes take place. Obviously our chemistry is to a great extent determined by our genes. There are genes presently under investigation that are believed to be responsible for manic-depression-type illnesses, in which one fluctuates from hyperactivity to depression or
