The results following surgery for Hirschsprung's disease are generally good. Long-term outcome may be difficult to assess fully, owing to the short follow-up periods reported in the literature. The incidence of incontinence is reported as ranging from zero to 82% and that of constipation from zero to 56%, these two complications probably having the greatest influence on quality of life.34-36
Whilst some patients may be relieved of their symptoms by surgery altogether, it should be remembered that, for some, lifelong symptoms persist particularly if the entire colon is involved by the disease.34,36
