The completion of the Human Genome Project promised the development of many new technologies and discoveries, all based on the idea of releasing the potential within our genome. The application of genomic discoveries and technologies has led to the emergence of nutrigenomics, a scientific discipline focused on gene-diet interactions. By generating knowledge about the impact of nutrients on the genome and individual responses to nutrition interventions, nutrigenomics has opened new avenues for the industry. Building a successful nutrigenomics industry will, however, depend on scientific credibility, consumer interest and confidence and a clearly defined regulatory environment.
