This is a lovely juice to have while the tropical fruit is in season. You can use pawpaw or papaya, depending on which is available. If you like, add the juice of a lime for extra zing.
1/2 ripe pineapple, peeled 500 g pawpaw, seeded 1 small or 1/2 large banana pulp from 2 passionfruit
Cut pineapple and pawpaw into pieces that will fit in the feed tube of your juice extractor. Process pineapple and pawpaw and pour into a blender jug. Add banana and blend until well combined, then stir in passionfruit pulp and drink immediately.
KATHY: I am definitely not a breakfast person and only eat it under sufferance. I am not really interested in serious food until about 12 pm, and then I am looking for something savoury. Over the years Jan has persuaded me to eat a healthy breakfast to see me through the morning and I do see the logic. However I still prefer something light such as fruit and a handful of almonds, or if I am really lashing out I will have a bowl of gluten-free muesli like the recipe on page 27. That's about it for me!
JAN: Breakfast is an important meal for me and I like to eat a combination of protein and carbohydrates because I find that mixture takes me through the morning well. Eating out for breakfast is a favourite weekend treat for my partner Gavin and I, and I usually order poached eggs, mushrooms and spinach or bok choy when detoxing. I'll also ask for a fresh vegetable juice and drink peppermint tea instead of coffee or regular tea.
You may be a big hearty breakfast person, or you may be an 'I can only stomach fruit in the morning' person. Whichever the case, make sure you do have breakfast as it is an important meal. Ideally, you would have some kind of protein (see page 13) along with some carbohydrate and a little fat. However, if fruit is your thing, then keep it simple. Add some nuts as well, maybe a little later in the morning. You may even enjoy our smoothie which is quite light, but provides a good range of nutrients.
If you suffer migraines, you might prefer to avoid dishes containing eggs as these may be a trigger for you. For all others, don't have more than 3 to 4 eggs per week during your detox.
If you are having breakfast out, try your best to choose dishes that are within our guidelines. Some good choices are muesli with soy milk and fruit, poached eggs with mushrooms and spinach, fruit salad with soy yoghurt or a soy and fruit smoothie.
