Everyone knows that they need proteins, but most think that they're just to build muscles. Proteins far exceed their role as musclemakers. Proteins are large, complex molecules in the cells of living things. They are an integral part of body structure, including muscle mass. Proteins differ greatly from carbohydrates and fats in chemical structure. Similar to carbohydrates and fats, proteins are comprised of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. But proteins also contain nitrogen. Nitrogen is found in amino acids, which are often referred to as the building blocks of proteins. Even amino acids can be further broken down, and the words peptide, protein folding, genetic makeup, and DNA would eventually need to be discussed, so to keep it simple, we'll just keep in the back of our minds that proteins have a very complex and involved structure.
