Constipation is a disorder characterized by the need to strain to pass hard stools and decreased frequency of stools (two to three times a week). Chronic constipation can lead to diverticulosis, in which multiple small sacs of the colonic mucosa are pushed out through the muscular wall of the colon. Diverticulosis occurs because chronic straining to pass feces produces increased pressure inside the colon. Inflammation often develops within the small sacs (diverticula) producing diverticulitis, with abdominal pain and bleeding. Constipation and diverticulitis are so-called diseases of civilization. They occur in near epidemic proportions in the industrialized countries, where one-fifth of the adult population suffers from chronic constipation and diverticu-losis occurs in about one-third of people older than 65 years.
The pathophysiology underlying functional constipation might be multifactorial and is certainly not well understood. Functional constipation results from abnormal function of the colon, rectum and sphincter complex, and conscious and subconscious factors in the child. Two main subgroups are described slow-transit constipation and outlet obstruction, leading to retention of feces in the rectum and extending to the whole colon. It is unclear whether different pathophysiological mechanisms are involved in each of these forms of constipation. The incidence of constipation was around 61 in a large cohort of mentally handicapped children in Dutch and Belgian institutions. Constipation was defined as bowel movements less than 3 times a week. Eighty-eight per cent of the constipated, mentally handicapped, children used laxatives, in comparison to 40 of constipated controls whose constipation was easily controlled. A significant correlation was found between non-ambulancy, cerebral palsy, use of anticonvulsive medication or benzodiazepines on the one hand and use of H2-receptor antagonists or proton pump inhibitors on the other. Also, an IQ of less than 50 correlated with food refusal, while there was no correlation with age, gender, use of cisapride, motilium, untreated GER disease or vomiting. The primary cause of both constipation and diverticulosis are highly refined and processed diets that are low in dietary fiber. Dietary fiber passes into the colon intact and absorbs water - increasing the bulk of the stool and softening it.1 This stimulates peristalsis in the colon, pushing the stool forward more rapidly. Dietary fiber is found in large amounts in whole grains, corn, vegetables, fruits (dried prunes, apples, raisins, and figs), seeds, and legumes. Increasing intake of these foods will soften the stool, and often eliminate constipation. Supplements of fiber, such as corn or wheat bran and psyllium-seed preparations, can also be beneficial. However, because large amounts of fiber can produce gas and abdominal discomfort, fiber intake should be increased gradually as tolerated overa period of several weeks. Ample fluid intake (8-10 large glasses per day) should accompany increases in dietary fiber.2
In infants and children, the presentation is often less dramatic and may not mimic acute intestinal obstruction (Figure 17.1). Severe constipation and recurrent fecal impaction are more common. Physical examination reveals a distended abdomen and a contracted anal sphincter and rectum in most children. The rectum is devoid of stools, except in cases of short-segment agan-glionosis. As the finger is withdrawn, there may be an explosive discharge of foul-smelling liquid stools, with decompression of the proximal normal bowel.

Lead exposure results from either inhaling or ingesting lead. Low levels of exposure (up to 10 pg dl) are associated with anemia, headaches, general weakness, fatigue, learning disabilities, impaired development of the nervous system, and delayed growth, while greater levels of exposure (70 pg dl) include symptoms such as decreased appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, and drowsiness. If blood lead levels exceed 70 pg dl, coma, seizures, bizarre behavior, impaired muscular coordination, and even death can occur.

Whole grains are the best natural sources of complex carbohydrates and fiber. Populations eating large amounts of whole-grain products (e.g., Africa and Asia) have far fewer intestinal and bowel problems-such as constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, and colon cancer-compared to Western populations consuming mainly refined carbohydrates.30
Insoluble fibers like cellulose and hemicellulose appear to have a beneficial effect upon the formation of feces and their evacuation. Bran is an excellent source of these insoluble fibers and explains the popularity of bran breakfast cereals, muffins, and other products among individuals experiencing constipation and diverticulosis. Soluble fibers can contribute to mass and moistness of feces but not to the same extent as insoluble fiber. However, it is important to recognize that both types of fibers are beneficial and should be sought out for general digestive health.
Constipation Constipation is a disorder of motor activity of the large bowel traditionally defined in terms of bowel frequency. The main symptom in constipation is straining at defecation, and discomfort, distension and incomplete rectal emptying are all considered part of the condition. Total gut transit time is generally prolonged in constipated subjects. Their potassium may help counter the effects of sodium on blood pressure, and their antioxidants may provide anti-aging properties that may reduce disease risk.
Iron supplements during pregnancy may cause side effects such as nausea, constipation, and appetite loss. If that happens, try taking the supplement with meals even though the iron may not be absorbed as well. Then make sure you eat more food sources of iron. A lower dosage might help, too talk to your doctor.
It will come as no surprise to my older readers to learn that improper digestion is one of the most frequent health complaints in those of us who have reached the golden years. Such difficulties can include dyspepsia, chronic nausea, bloating, weight loss, and chronic constipation. A major reason for constipation is simple dehydration. Most studies have shown that the elderly are frequently dehydrated, a main cause of which is their desire to reduce the number of trips to the bathroom especially at night. As a result, fluid intake in this group is severely inadequate, which causes increased dehydration of the bowel, leading to constipation. A main function of the large bowel is reabsorption of water. Normally, we absorb about one liter of fluid from the bowel a day. When dehydrated, we absorb even more water from the bowel and excrete less in the urine.
During the first trimester of pregnancy in poor women improved birth weight, lowered the incidence of prematurity, but did not alter the incidence of SGA deliveries 38 . The timing and dose of supplementation, as well as the frequency of supplementation, are important considerations in interventions during pregnancy 7, 39 . Large and frequent doses of iron as usually prescribed in the United States (Table 16.3) are frequently associated with complaints of constipation, dark stool, and gastrointestinal (GI) upset. Alternative strategies include nondaily supplementation at a much lower dose, delayed release supplements, and forms of iron salts that are less irritating to the GI tract. Since it is unlikely that dietary intakes alone will meet the iron requirements during pregnancy, it is imperative that cost-effective supplementation vehicles be developed that avoid these side effects while maintaining a positive iron balance. Towards the end of the 1960s, the use of antacids such as aluminum hydroxide and aluminum carbonate became common, taking advantage of one of its side effects which was the absorption of phosphorus in the gut (37). Dietitians welcomed this new therapy as the renal diet could be liberalized, while severe bone pain and intense itching were relieved. Binders containing a mixture of aluminum and magnesium were used in some areas. These products reduced constipation and it was thought that higher magnesium levels decreased the muscle cramps that frequently occurred during dialysis. Antacids containing calcium carbonate were regarded as ineffective during this time period (38).
A woman's intake of dietary fiber must be increased during menopause to prevent constipation. This objective can be accomplished by following the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend consuming six servings of whole grains and cereals, three to five servings of vegetables, and two to four servings of fruit per day. Exercise is also very important for all older individuals. Thirty minutes of moderate daily exercise, such as speed walking, is recommended. Other exercises, such as flexibility and strength training to maintain lean muscle mass and bone density, can be very helpful if done two to three times a week. see also Women's Nutritional Issues.
In order to do so these drugs must increase one or more chemicals in the brain that affect appetite, namely serotonin. Phen-fen coupled phentermine with fenfluramine, an amphetamine which was removed from the market in 1996 because of an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. Side effects of sibutramine can include mild increases in blood pressure and heart rate, headache, dry mouth, constipation, and insomnia. Phentermine along with other appetite suppressants (phendimetrazine (Bontril, Plegine, Prelu-2, X-Trozine, Adipost) and diethylpropion (Tenuate, Tenuate dospan) can cause sleeplessness and nervousness.
A number of health and disease end-points, affecting a large proportion of the population, need to be addressed in developing healthy foods. Some, such as cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, osteoporosis, and constipation are associated with a combination of ageing and unhealthy dietary patterns. Others, such as obesity, are largely the result of food processors and marketers successfully providing foods that appeal to the basic human preferences for sweetness and fats, in all age groups. When the body is unable to absorb important nutrients from food (a condition called malabsorption), several conditions may arise. These may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, gas, bloating, and constipation. Other conditions may develop as well. For example, people with celiac disease may experience anemia (low levels of hemoglobin in the blood) caused by the body's inability to properly absorb the mineral iron or the vitamin folate, bone disease (caused by the body's inability to properly absorb the mineral calcium and or vitamin D), and weight loss (because the body cannot properly absorb calories from the macronutrients fat, protein, and carbohydrate).
But bulimic people don't want to keep the food they eat in their bodies. They may use laxatives to increase defecation, but the more common method they use for getting rid of food is regurgitation. Bulimic people may simply retire to the bathroom after eating and stick their fingers into their throats to make themselves throw up. Or they may use emetics (drugs that induce vomiting). Either way, danger looms.
A concern about some form of overweight is common in most sports events where certain weight categories are in place (Table 1). Wrestling, particularly, has been subject to a great number of studies that have dealt with body composition, eating habits and weight loss regimens. A number of these studies have focused on the impact that rapid weight loss may have on various physical performances parameters. The term subclinical eating disorder is frequently used to describe individuals, athletes and nonathletes, who have considerable eating pathology and body weight concerns, but do not show significant psychopathology or fail to meet all of the DSM-IV criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorders not otherwise specified 18,19 . Many athletes who report using pathogenic weight control methods (eg, laxatives, diet pills, and excessive exercise) do not technically meet the criteria for a clinical eating disorder 19 .

Binge eating disorder (BED), different from occasional overindulging, is the uncontrollable eating of large amounts of food in a short time. Unlike bulimia, a person with BED usually doesn't purge, fast, abuse diuretics or laxatives, or overexercise. Estimates suggest that 2 percent of Americans (as many as 4 million) have this disorder many are obese or overweight.
However, if this increase in fiber isn't enough, several laxitive tea mixtures are available to gently stimulate your GI to expel feces and waste, creating a rapid weight loss that will not negatively affect performance - as long as you begin them 2-3 days out from your competition. With this 2-3 day buffer zone you can make the necessary changes to ensure the laxatives don't have a negative effect. For example, if your laxative appears to be too strong (i.e. causes large weight loss or diarrhea), simply reduce your intake of it or stop altogether. The use of strong laxatives or the abuse of laxatives can lead to diarrhea, mineral, and water loss. Very high doses of magnesium supplements can cause diarrhea. Especially in the elderly, they can also cause problems with the kidneys because the kidneys are trying to remove excess magnesium. The elderly are at risk of magnesium tox-icity because kidney function declines with age and they are more likely to take magnesium-containing laxatives and antacids.
The initial assessment takes into account the diet history of the woman as well as any symptoms or problems that might hinder adequate intake. Typical dietary, appetite, gastrointestinal symptoms (i.e., nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation), difficulty with chewing and swallowing, food allergies, ethnic and cultural food practices, and household food security should be considered and included in the assessment. Furthermore, all medications and supplements as well as complementary therapies should be investigated in order to determine possible drug-nutrient interactions.

Following this program can add needed vitamins and minerals to your daily food intake cut your risk of heart disease, cancer and digestive diseases help control cholesterol prevent constipation and can help manage your body weight and percent body fat. Additionally, many fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants (see the Glossary) and other nutrients that are beneficial to your health. Ideas to help you incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your diet can be found in Appendix A.
For the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease, the subject's history is very important. The crucial elements to obtain are the age of the appearance of symptoms whether the passage of meconium has been normal or delayed and whether the child presented with episodes of functional intestinal obstruction. In addition, a functional (idiopathic) megacolon must be ruled out. A clinical comparison between functional and congenital megacolon is shown in Table 17.1. When the history (early onset of constipation, absence of fecal soiling) and or the physical examination (empty rectal ampulla) suggests an organic cause, anorectal manometry should be performed. Barium enema is helpful in the assessment of a transition zone between aganglionic and ganglionic bowel, and in giving an estimation of the length of an aganglionic segment. This condition is characterized by the absence of enteric neurons and hypertrophy of nerve trunks in the distal bowel always involving the rectum and for a variable distance proximally. There is an absence of peristaltic activity in this aganglionic segment resulting in symptoms of intractable constipation. The bowel proximal to the agan-glionic segment contains ganglionated cells, and peristaltic activity is normal. However, in the so-called transitional zone, immediately proximal to the aganglionic segment, neuronal cells may exist but they are commonly of abnormal architecture and the intestinal peristalsis is abnormal. This zone is of fundamental importance when considering surgical treatment of this disorder.
By moving food quickly through your intestines, insoluble fiber may help relieve or prevent digestive disorders such as constipation or diver-ticulitis (infection that occurs when food gets stuck in small pouches in the wall of the colon). Insoluble fiber also bulks up stool and makes it softer, reducing your risk of developing hemorrhoids and lessening the discomfort if you already have them.
Training is essential when a child tries to defecate without a sensation of urge (e.g. during toilet training). During the process of toilet training the child starts to obtain control of these complex mechanisms in the defecation process. The will of the child seems to be a crucial factor in this process. Aberrations in these complex interacting mechanisms might lead to clinical signs and symptoms of constipation and fecal incontinence. The patho-physiological mechanisms of these clinical entities are largely unknown. In the past decades, only little progress has been made in resolving these mechanisms.11

A varied diet based on plant proteins is adequate, yielding growth and body maintenance results equivalent to a diet based on meat protein.39 The lower incidence of obesity, constipation, lung cancer, hypertension, coronary artery disease, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, reduced risk of breast cancer, diverticular disease, colon cancer, calcium kidney stones, and osteoporosis appear to be obvious advantages particularly of the well balanced vegan diet for the elderly.3,39,40 Key et al.,40 (Table 11.1) show the protective effect of daily fresh fruit intake in ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and lung cancer, and daily raw salad protection for ischemic heart disease. The functional diagnosis of constipation Constipation, in approximately 5-10 of the patients, is a symptom of an underlying disorder. In the remaining 90-95 of the patients constipation is idiopathic. This label implies that no clear underlying mechanism explains the defecation problem. The differential diagnosis is large, but it is highly unlikely that one of these diagnoses is missed on clinical grounds, and therefore investigations should be limited and approached cautiously. The main presenting symptoms of constipation in children are a combination of a low defecation frequency and soiling or encopresis. The latter occurs several times a day and, in severe fecal retention, also at night. If specifically asked, most children will report production of a large amount of stools, which might clog the toilet with the frequency of once a week or once a month. Primary visceral neuropathies can be subdivided into familial neuropathies, where a distinct pattern of inheritance is known, and sporadic cases, in which there are distinctive clinical and morphological findings. In this chapter, Hirschsprung's disease, which is clearly a primary visceral neuropathy, will not be discussed. The definition of constipation in early childhood is elusive (Forsyth et al., 1985). Stool patterns vary normally from child to child. In infancy, true constipation is infrequent. There is wide variation in the normal number of bowel movements per day, ranging from a bowel movement days apart, to one after each feeding (Rappaport and Levine, 1986). Normal bowel function occurs even when an infant appears to be in extreme discomfort as evidenced by straining and reddening of the face. There is no evidence that inadequate fluid or carbohydrate intake is the cause of constipation in infants nor is there evidence that treating constipation with fruit juices or corn syrup is efficacious. Educating parents about the wide variation in normal bowel function seems essential for avoiding the overtreatment of normal variants.
Laxatives and GI Waste If more GI waste needs to be cleared, the use of a mild laxative can help. Several laxative tea mixtures are available to gently stimulate your GI to expel feces and waste. Begin taking your laxative about 2 days out from your weigh-in (when you start to cut back on water intake). But be careful, use only mild laxatives. The use of strong laxatives or the abuse of laxatives can lead to a diarrhea that persists until competition day. So stick with the fiber and if you're still not regular, add in some laxative teas.
The Rome II criteria are currently used to define childhood constipation based on the presenting symptom profile. Two subgroups, namely functional constipation and functional fecal retention, are distinguished. Functional constipation is defined as follows in infants and children at least 2 weeks of scybalous, pebble-like hard stools for a majority of stools or firm stools two or fewer times week and no evidence of structural or metabolic disease.2 main difference between functional constipation and functional fecal retention is the occurrence of retentive posturing in the latter. Retentive posturing is the behavioral withholding of stool during the sensation of urge, which, according to the authors of the Rome II criteria, mostly results from painful defecation. Constipation is a common disorder in Western societies. Survey estimates of the prevalence of constipation in childhood vary between 2 and 15 . The average prevalence of constipation increases from childhood (2 ) exponentially to 15 in adults. It is estimated that a general practitioner will see 20-30 children with constipation per year in an average practice of 2500 patients. Around 3 of a pediatrician's practice consists of children with chronic constipation. For the pediatric gastroenterologist, consultation rates vary between 10 and 20 . Thus, a substantial number of children have constipation,1 and this problem is of paramount practical importance for physicians.
In the neonatal period the disease should be considered in any infant who fails to pass meconium in the first 48 h of life. The usual presentation in the neonatal period is with constipation, abdominal distension and eventually vomiting during the first few days of life. More severe symptoms may be present in the neonatal period including those of gastrointestinal obstruction, enterocolitis (see below) and rarely perforation. Later in infancy symptoms of intractable constipation may signify the presence of Hirschsprung's disease.
From the pathophysiological point of view, pro-kinetics seems a logical therapeutic approach. However, efficacy data for the whole group of prokinetic drugs are disappointing. Cisapride was shown to have some efficacy in esophageal acid-exposure duration,135 but it is now banned because of cardiac side-effects. Prucalopride, a 5-HT4 agonist, as been suggested has a possible option, but although the drug seems effective in adult constipation,136 its use was prohibited for children because of the extrapyramidal side-effects. Ondansetron is a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist that accelerates gastric emptying, inhibits chemotherapy-induced emesis, but prolongs colonic transit time.137 The most frequently reported adverse events of ondansetron were mild to moderate headache, constipation and diarrhea in patients receiving chemotherapy. Tegaserod is a partial 5-HT4 agonist that has been mostly studied in constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome in adults.138 Tegaserod was shown to...
Diverticular disease is really two conditions. Diver-ticulosis is a condition in which pouches, called diverticula, develop in the weakened walls of the intestine, most often the colon. Diverticulosis is linked to an overall eating approach that's low in fiber. Constipation makes the problem worse. These pouches can become inflamed and infected from bacteria in feces that get trapped there a health problem called diverticulitis. The majority (about 50 percent) of Americans ages sixty to eighty have diverticulosis just about everybody does after age eighty. For diverticulosis eat plenty of high-fiber foods keep waste moving through the intestines to avoid constipation. A high-fiber diet is likely the only treatment you need. Nuts and seeds are likely okay to eat. Studies don't support a link between inflammation of the diverticula and eating nuts and seeds. See chapter 6 for more about dietary fiber.
Gastrointestinal (GI) problems such as constipation or diarrhea are common among athletes. If you've ever been plagued by one or the other during training or competition, you know how worrisome this is and how much it can interfere with top performance. That's why most athletes go to great extremes to promote regular bowel movements. People who fear becoming constipated should faithfully eat fiber-rich cereals and breads and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to help prevent constipation, drink warm liquids in the morning to encourage regular bowel movements, and drink more than enough fluids. If you struggle with rapid transit, you should try to determine what triggers the diarrhea by carefully charting for weeks every food and fluid you ingest, as well as the times you exercise and the times you have diarrhea. Be sure to include sugar-free gum and candies that contain sorbitol, a type of sugar that can cause gastrointestinal problems if taken in excess.
Today's grains are full of health benefits. Many whole grains are good fiber sources that help to protect against heart disease, but also constipation, diabetes, and diverticular disease, along with other phytonutrients they also supply B vitamins (including folate), vitamin E, and trace minerals such as copper and zinc. Refined grains are enriched with vitamins and minerals. What's more, all grains are rich in starches (complex carbohydrates) and low in fat. The fat they supply is mostly unsaturated a heart health benefit. Seeds such as amaranth and wild rice are high in protein and often are used as grain substitutes.
Soluble dietary fiber, such as the pectins in apples and the gums in beans, mops up cholesterol and lowers your risk of heart disease. Insoluble dietary fiber, such as the cellulose in fruit skins, bulks up stool and prevents constipation, moving food more quickly through your gut so there's less time for food to create substances thought to trigger the growth of cancerous cells. Exercise aids digestive function, helps reduce constipation, reduces stress, helps with muscle tone, helps maintain a healthy weight and decreases cardiovascular disease risk. One of the benefits that is particularly helpful for detoxing is increased circulation - both blood circulation and lymphatic flow. This helps reduce fluid retention and encourages the lymphatic system to move toxins through the body to be eliminated.
Since people usually don't stay with them, there's usually no long-term weight loss. They also may result in fatigue, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, or hair loss. For people with some health problems, such as insulin-dependent diabetes or kidney disease, a very-low-calorie liquid diet can be harmful.
Complex carbohydrates, which are a major source of energy for the body, are comprised of two main classes starch, which is digestible, and fiber, which is generally not digestible. There are also two kinds of fiber insoluble and soluble. Insoluble fiber, found in wheat bran and some fruits and vegetables, cannot be dissolved in water. This type of fiber is made up of cellulose and hemicellulose, substances that offer rigidity to plant material (e.g., the peels and skins of fruits and vegetables, wood, stems, and the outer coverings of nuts, seeds, and grains). Insoluble fiber acts as a natural laxative, giving stool the bulk necessary to move quickly through the gastrointestinal tract. In addition to preventing constipation and hemorrhoids, insoluble fiber may also reduce the risk of colon cancer by speeding the passage of food through the digestive tract.
Liver function also declines in older adults, decreasing clearance of many drugs and increasing the potential for adverse drug-nutrient interactions (see appendix I). Constipation is a common complaint in older adults. Immobility, dehydration, and foods low in fiber contribute to this problem. Increasing physical activity, consuming more dietary fiber - eating whole-grain products, legumes, fruits, and vegetables - and drinking from six to eight glasses of water per day is beneficial. Additional vitamin C (0.5 g-1.0 g) per day may also help soften and ease passage of the stool.

Through the controlling cycles, acrid flavors can damage mostly liver and gallbladder (ascendant liver yang, or gan yang shang kang, for example irritability, hyperactivity, sleep disorders.) Acrid flavors disperse spirit ( shen ), resulting in inner restlessness, hyperactiv-ity, and sleep disorders. Via the engendering (sheng) cycle, kidney essence may overheat, causing exaggerated sexual desire, sexual compulsions. May weaken muscle tone and cause dryness in large intestine (constipation).
By far the greatest variety of parasites afflicting the present population of the Western world comes from animal foods. Almost every variety of commercial meat available is loaded with parasitic worms. Also, parasites are present in tainted water sources. Parasites thrive in an unhealthy body. They feed on excessive toxicity (constipation) in the colon, particularly cooked starch and decaying cooked animal foods. In that way they are somewhat beneficial they help detoxify the colon by breaking down substances the body cannot deal with into waste the body can eliminate. However, when the body becomes so weakened from a toxic lifestyle that the parasites breach the digestive tract and enter the internal organs of the body, major problems arise. Liver flukes, pancreatic flukes, eggs in the brain tissue, eggs in the liver (occasionally mistaken as liver cancer), etc., all have their role in the manifestation of the major diseases.
Patients with constipation.124,125 Fiber may also decrease intraluminal pressures, reducing wall tension and pain.126 In committed families wishing to increase dietary fibers, the change should be attempted gradually, as the excess of undigested carbohydrates in the colon results in fermentation with consequent increase of gas, aggravating IBS symptoms.127 Frequently, non-pharmacological strategies alone fail to bring complete relief to IBS patients, necessitating pharmacotherapy (Table 14.4). Laxatives Patients with severe constipation may find relief by combining fiber with a laxative. It is our preference to use polyethylene glycol or a senna derivative, but other laxatives may be used according to the practitioner's preference. Constipation difficulty passing feces It is usually at this age that young adults start gaining body fat and reducing their physical activity, resulting in an accumulation of fat in the abdominal areas. This is an ever-increasing risk factor in the population of the United States, where obesity is not only a problem in adults, but also in children. It is believed that the high level of obesity in the United States is mostly due to bad dietary practices such as eating a high-fat, low-complex carbohydrate (low fiber) diet, including excessive amounts of meat. The indulgence in fast foods and a lack of regular physical activity are major factors. Obesity is a risk factor for other degenerative diseases, such as type II (adult onset) diabetes, diseases of heart and circulation, and certain cancers. Another nutritional problem related to eating such a diet is constipation, due to low-fiber diets. This may result in hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, appendicitis, and other more serious diseases...
Although it is true that it has no actual energy value, it nevertheless plays an extremely important role in the digestive process. The cellulose, lignin, pectin and gums that it contains ensure good intestinal function, and lack of dietary fibre is the cause of most cases of constipation. Moreover, fibre is very rich in vitamins, major minerals and trace elements 4 , without which serious deficiencies can occur.
What are the health benefits of a vegetarian or semivegetarian diet Vegetarians are less at risk for heart attack and diabetes.41 The risk of vegetarians suffering a heart attack is around two-thirds lower than that of meat eaters.42 High blood pressure, obesity, and high blood cholesterol are also less likely in vegetarians. Vegetarians suffer less from many digestive disorders, including gallbladder disease, constipation, and colon cancer.4143 Studies in

An eating disorder results in inadequate intakes of kcals and nutrients to replenish the energy used during daily activities. Two common types of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Some behaviors people with eating disorders engage in are starvation, self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, and the misuse of laxatives or diuretics. Both disorders are extremely damaging to the mind and body, and, if untreated, can lead to death. These disorders can have long-term health consequences by affecting the heart, liver, kidneys, and bone. In addition, these behaviors severely limit physical and mental performance.
Although dietary potassium intake is by and large adequate to meet human needs, situations can place the body at risk for potassium deficiency. Persistent use of laxatives can result in a lowered body potassium level by decreasing the amount of potassium absorbed from the digestive tract. Furthermore, chronic use of certain diuretics used to control blood pressure may also result in increased urinary loss of potassium. Physicians will routinely monitor the potassium levels of patients following either of these prescribed protocols. People who frequently vomit after a meal, either involuntarily or voluntarily, can reduce potassium absorption. Finally, people following a very low calorie diet (VLCD) for extended periods of time need to be concerned about their potassium consumption along with levels of other nutrients as well.
Weight loss agents contain ingredients such as L-carnitine, which may prevent lactic acid accumulation but does not promote fat loss quercetin, an antioxidant that is important for the heart but does not aid the loss of body fat hydroxycitrate (a diuretic) ephedra caffeine, and senna and or cascara (herbal laxatives). Chitin, or chitosan (advertised as a fat trapper or fat blocker ), is made from the shells of insects and shellfish and may lower cholesterol, but it also does not lower body fat levels. It can bind with calcium, iron, and magnesium and interfere with the absorption of Vitamins A, D, E, and K. Any weight loss experienced with the use of these products is primarily due to water loss associated with the laxative diuretic components.
Summary A vegetarian diet, defined as an eating style that avoids meat, fish, and poultry, can be healthful and nutritionally adequate for a pregnant woman. Some vegetarians, called vegans, avoid dairy products and eggs as well as meat, fish, and poultry. Vegan diets can also be healthful and nutritionally adequate for pregnancy. Vegetarian diets can provide numerous long-term health benefits including a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, some forms of cancer, and hypertension. Key nutrients for vegetarian pregnancy include protein, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids. Vegetarian women should also be counseled to follow standard weight gain recommendations. A vegetarian or vegan diet can meet requirements for all of these nutrients although in some instances, fortified foods or supplements can be especially useful in meeting recommendations. This repletion heat syndrome dries out body fluids, causing intense thirst, constipation, and a dry tongue. Subsequent upbearing heat in the stomach channel causes swollen and bleeding gums. The repletion condition also prevents stomach qi from downbearing, resulting in esophageal (sour) reflux. In extreme cases, stomach fire combined with phlegm can impair the spirit (shen). This can lead to disturbed sleep and psychological symptoms. Protracted exposure to extreme heat (fire) can damage stomach substance (yin damage, frustration). A life-style health advantage can be rated relative to improved mortality of those in other life-styles. Certainly, we must also relate to improved quality of life, or as reduced morbidity. Vegetarians, as health-conscious people, have reduced mortality from ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovas-cular disease, and all causes combined.40,41 More specifically, they experience reduced morbidity and mortality due to obesity, constipation, lung cancer, hypertension, Type II diabetes, and gallstones compared with omnivores.40 Diet and immune function are a very important part of the reduced mortality

Good examples of the effect of disturbance of the endocrine environment are the ileus associated with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-secreting tumors such as ganglioneuromas, and the constipation caused by hypothyroidism. A diet heavy in hybridized sweet fruit can lead to constipation, especially if the individual is not highly active. Because excess sugar spills off into the urine, excessive urination can occur when the sugar is not being immediately utilized (due to lack of activity). Excessive urination leads to dehydration and a potassium overdose, behind which follows constipation. This process is accelerated if nuts are included in the diet (without greens) as nuts are more difficult to digest and slow digestion. If this process continues unabated, a minor diabetic condition will occur as the body is constantly urinating to spill off excess sugar. Individuals with BN engage in binge eating episodes, followed by compensatory behaviors to prevent any increases in body weight. Purging behaviors include self-induced vomiting or self-prescribed use of enemas, laxatives, or diuretics. Nonpurging behaviors include fasting and excessive exercise. While clinically diagnosed BN occurs in approximately 5 of the female population, up to 20 of women have reported bulimic behaviors in their lifetimes 6, 7 . Clinical features of BN include Russell's sign, dental enamel erosion, dental caries, and enlargement of the parotid glands in those who use self-induced vomiting as a purging behavior. Use of enemas, laxatives, and diuretics as well as vomiting can lead to electrolyte imbalances, cardiac dysfunction, and other neurologic disorders.
